The Great Wave off Kanagawa

The Great Wave off Kanagawa (from the series, 36 Views of Mt. Fuji)

The Great Wave off Kanagawa is one of the famous ukiyoe woodblock prints by Katsushika Hokusai, and it is one of the ukiyoe series, 36 Views of Mt. Fuji.

You see the great blue and white wave ascending from the left and then descending over Mt. Fuji sharply.  In the foreground, the waves and the ships are enlarged boldly, and faraway Mt. Fuji is depicted at a smaller size compared with these waves and ships. How marvelous the dynamic composition and the well thought-out perspective are! Moreover, the contrast between the movements of the waves and ships and the stillness of Mt. Fuji is excellent. The technique of depicting those white wave splashes is also wonderful.

Gaifuu-Kaisei (Red Fuji)

Gaifuu-Kaisei (aka Red Fuji)(from the series, 36 Views of Mt. Fuji)

Gaifuu-Kaisei, literally one clear day with a gentle south wind, is also a famous ukiyoe by Hokusai. It is generally known as Aka Fuji (Red Fuji).

Every year, from late summer to early autumn, Mt. Fuji shines bright in the morning sun and is dyed red, which Hokusai depicted skillfully in this ukiyoe. The contrast of the colors — the blue sky, the red mountain and the green woodland — is superb.
